Missing teeth can cause problems in the mouth, such as allowing the remaining teeth to shift and even changing the structure of the face. Dentures, or false teeth, are a good solution for replacing missing teeth. These prosthetic devices are supported by the surrounding soft and hard tissues of the mouth. Conventional dentures are removable and come incomplete or partial sets; partial dentures are used if most of the natural teeth still remain.
Having dentures near you, made takes several dentist appointments. First, highly accurate molds and measurements will be taken of the mouth in order to create custom-fit dentures. These impressions will be sent to a dental laboratory where the dentures are created. Several “try-in” appointments will likely be necessary in order for the cosmetic dentist to adjust the dentures to the appropriate shape, color, and fit.
It may take some time to get adjusted to wearing dentures. They may feel awkward or uncomfortable and cause irritation, soreness, and/or increased saliva flow. Eating and speaking with the dentures will most likely take some practice, but after a short period, these issues should go away. Dentures should last for years but require diligent cleaning and care.
