A tooth becomes affected with decay when plaque and debris are allowed to accumulate on it. Bacteria that live in the plaque start to attack the teeth, breaking down the enamel and causing damage. To prevent further damage from occurring, possibly leading to a root canal or even tooth extraction, a filling will be placed.
At DeAngelis Family Dentistry, we utilize composite fillings. These give the teeth a more natural look and are less noticeable than amalgam fillings, but are still effective at restoring health, functionality, and strength. Composite fillings are generally made of powdered glass and acrylic resin. They can be color-matched to the natural teeth.
To place a filling, the affected tooth must first have all the decay removed. This will require some drilling; a numbing agent will be applied to the surrounding areas to minimize pain and discomfort. Once the decay has been removed, the tooth will be prepared by being cleaned of bacteria and debris. The composite filling will then be placed in the tooth. This is usually done in layers, with each layer being cured (hardened) before the next one is applied. When all the layers have been applied, the filling will be shaved down to match the fit and the bite of the teeth.
